What Is the Difference Between AI, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning?

These three terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different things. Artificial Intelligence is the broadest concept: any system that mimics human-like intelligence, including rule-based expert systems from the 1980s. Machine Learning is a subset of AI where systems learn patterns from data rather than following hard-coded rules. If your software improves its performance by exposure to more examples, it is using ML. Deep Learning is a further subset that uses neural networks with many layers to learn complex representations automatically. Think of it as nested circles: all deep learning is machine learning, and all machine learning is AI, but not the reverse. The reason deep learning gets so much attention is that it has achieved breakthrough results in image recognition, natural language processing, and game playing. However, simpler ML methods like decision trees or linear regression remain incredibly useful and far easier to interpret. Knowing which approach fits your problem is more valuable than chasing the latest trend.
